In the August 15th edition of the Wapakoneta Daily News, John Bernstein's column from the "Wondering Wanderer" showcased deeply troubling and homophobic views. I have formally requested that my rebuttal be published in response to his piece. Should my rebuttal not appear, it is provided immediately following the photo of Bernstein's column below:
John Bernstein's column, which promised to deliver "simple truths," fell short by presenting not only simplistic arguments but also a troubling disregard for historical and scientific accuracy. While a comprehensive rebuttal would be ideal, time constraints and patience limitations necessitate focusing on the key issues.
Firstly, the notion of "one man, one woman" as the historical norm for marriage is a misconception. Even in biblical texts, monogamous marriage is infrequent. More commonly, historical practices included polygamy and concubinage. What some consider "traditional marriage" would be unfamiliar to many historical perspectives. In fact, the idea of marriage as an equitable partnership is a relatively recent development in American history.
Historically, marriage often resembled a financial transaction between families, with little regard for the consent or desires of the individuals involved. This arrangement, which prioritized familial alliances over personal connection, is one few would endorse today for their own children.
Furthermore, many ancient cultures accepted and even celebrated same-sex relationships and marriages. During Japan's Edo period, such relationships were common among samurai, and Indigenous cultures in the Americas recognized various same-sex partnerships.
Modern science and reputable medical organizations affirm that homosexuality is not an "abnormality." While heterosexuality is more prevalent, homosexuality is a natural variation of human sexuality, observed across numerous animal species, including bonobos, dolphins, penguins, lions, and sheep. What is conspicuously absent in the animal kingdom is the irrational hatred and bigotry directed towards same-sex relationships—traits that are, in fact, abnormal.
Bernstein's reductionist view of marriage as merely a vehicle for sexual gratification is misguided. Marriage, whether between same-sex or heterosexual partners, fundamentally encompasses love and commitment, far beyond the realm of sexual pleasure.
Lastly, children benefit from loving and supportive families, regardless of the parents' sexual orientation. Reputable studies consistently show that children of same-sex parents thrive emotionally and intellectually, debunking any claims to the contrary. For those seeking factual information, science offers a far more accurate guide than outdated prejudices.
In conclusion, while homosexuality is a natural occurrence in the animal kingdom, homophobia is a uniquely human phenomenon—and that, indeed, is what could be considered truly abnormal.
