Like all Americans, I am deeply disturbed by the assassination attempt at the Trump campaign event. As we await further details, we must agree that violence is never an acceptable means to resolve differences.
However, some are using this moment to claim that any criticism of Donald Trump is now off-limits. It is not! While Trump did not deserve to be a target of violence, he also does not deserve to be President. Criticizing Trump’s authoritarian tendencies and the threat he poses to American democracy is not inciting violence; it’s stating a clear fact. His own rhetoric and actions, from calling on supporters to attack protesters to inciting an insurrection, demonstrate a consistent pattern of promoting violence and undermining democratic principles.
Trump’s statements about being a "day-one dictator," his support for regressive policies targeting marginalized communities, and his associates’ involvement in undemocratic plans like Project 2025 make it clear he endangers our democratic system and the freedoms of all Americans. Trump has consistently promoted political violence, from encouraging attacks on protesters, to promising to imprison political rivals, to calling the media the enemy of the state, to making false claims about migrants, Democrats, and LGBTQ people, to inciting the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
As Americans committed to democracy, we will not be silent about these threats. A second Trump presidency poses a grave danger to our democratic experiment, and we must stand firm in our resolve to protect our nation’s values.
